Report on Intellectual Discourse: General Election 13: 1 Vote 1 Obligation: Students, What's Your Call?

In the name of Allah
the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful

            On 14th March 2011 at Main Auditorium, Kulliyyah of Science, IIUM Kuantan Campus, MRC Talhah under Training and Development Bureau (TnD), in collaboration with Wawasan Club had organised an Intellectual Discourse (2) entitled “General Election 13: 1 Vote 1 Obligation. Students, what’s your call?”.  The objectives were to expose the students and staff about the obligatory to elect the best leaders among society, to express Islamic views towards democracy, to know the principle of election matters according to Islam and to inculcate awareness among IIUM students and other IPTA/IPTS the reality of Muslim world which decline in every aspect and stress on their role to revive the glory of Islam. 

            “Leaders for the future depend on leaders today”. It is important to note that every young individual, specifically graduates from IIUM, has a large role in leadership, politics and the general well-being of one’s country. As a leader of tomorrow, students must have a sense of awareness on the sustainable development of his country, the integrity of his country’s government body, and his citizen men’s safety upbringing. One also learns to inculcate the teachings of Islam in all aspects of life, be it on a national or global basis. It is essential for students to have these leadership qualities to be great leaders tomorrow.

            As citizens of a nation, role in choosing and supporting the right leader is crucial in order to achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for the nation. Thus, the Intellectual Discourse will elaborate students’ roles in government elections such as the General Election-13 (PRU-13). It also touches on an Islamic perspective of the importance of taking part in these political decisions. Governments cannot stand alone, their people are their essence. This Intellectual Discourse is what all students need. As well-rounded Muslim leaders and since politics is a big aspect in Islam it helps broaden our perspectives on the importance of politics, a just leader and responsible citizens.

            First panelist was Associate Prof. Dr. Abu Hassan bin Hasbullah, PHD (University Vienna), MA, (UM), BA, (UM), Associate Professor at Departments of Media Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UM and also as panelist at Astro Awani, second panelist was Ustaz Mohd Dzul Khairi Mohd Noor, University of Malaya, Ex-President of Gabungan Pelajar Islam Se-Malaysia (GAMIS), Ketua Pemuda Persatuan Ulama' Malaysia (PUM), third panelist was Ustaz Syed Abdul Kadir Syed Hussin Aljoofre, Bachelor (Hons.) in Syariah, Universiti Al-Azhar, Management Committee of Sekretariat Himpunan Ulama' Rantau Asia (SHURA), Religious Moderator at iLuvIslam.com, Panelist of "Tanyalah Ustaz" and "Hujah" at TV9. This intellectual discourse was conducted by Brother Muhamad Zaki Sukery, Graduates from IIUM Gombak, Ex-President Maaruf Club, IIUM Gombak, Vice President of Gabungan Pelajar Islam Se-Malaysia (GAMIS).

            The objectives and missions were achieved. Moderator and speakers were professional and the messages conveyed successfully towards the audiences. All the audiences gave positive response and pay their attention from the beginning until end of the program. This program was hope to give some changes on students awareness towards national politics issues.
